In this picture a piece of paper is falling through the air. Unlike free fall, falling through the air involves air resistance. When an object falls through the air the f weight or the weight of the object needs to equal f air or air resistance. One way to increase the air resistance is by speed, because the air resistance will grow as an object gets faster. Another thing that effects air resistance is surface area, if you increase surface area the f air will also increase. This piece of paper falling through the air embodies surface area, and that because it has a large surface area the f air will get bigger. Also, because this piece of paper has a large surface area it does not need to go faster to reach it's f air. But if it was crumpled up, because it wouldnt have a large surface area it would need to go faster in order to have the f air equal the f weight.
