In this picture consider the book at rest on the table. If we call the gravitational force exerted on the book the action, what is the reaction force according to Newtons 3^rd law? Newton's 3rd law is that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The table pushes book up book pushes table down. Also, earth pulls book down and book pulls the earth up.
